FOR SALE : PAIR OF RAVENS
Pair of stylised ravens, part of a limited run of reproduction composition stone modelled from late nineteenth originals, in the Fornnordisk, Jugendstil or Old Norse revival style, which combined traditional vernacular forms taken from folk art with ancient Nordic motifs. The ravens could represent those of the Norse god Odin. Approx size 40ins high. [The photo shows one raven of the pair on offer, the other is slightly different in pose and stature]
NOTE: Two ravens, Hugin (Thought) and Munin (Memory), accompanied Odin, king of the gods in Norse mythology, and god of knowledge, wisdom and poetry. In Gylfaginning (The Deluding of Gylfi), a stanza from the Younger (or Prose) Edda, first written down from the oral tradition by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century, reads:
Two ravens sit on Odin's shoulders, bringing to his ears news they see or hear; they are Hugin and Munin. He sends them at daybreak to fly the world, and they return by breakfast; so Odin knows what is going on, and man calls him the god-of-ravens.
